Shimon Peres breakfast
Gracing Buck’s for Breakfast of the Year came Shimon Peres, Nobel Laureate, Minister for Regional Co-operation and Founder of the Peres Center For Peace, as guest of Isabel Maxwell and Commtouch (www.commtouch.com) who hosted a private breakfast with Silicon Valley leaders Tim Koogle of Yahoo!; Les Vadasz of Intel; Steve Jurvetson of Draper, Fisher, Jurvetson, John Dean of the Silicon Valley Bank, Nahum Sharfman of Dealtime, and Chemi Peres of Polaris Venture Capital – who came to listen to Peres’ vision of the Internet being utilized as a force for
Peace and to discuss practical ways of realizing that vision in the Middle East, and beyond.
When Michael Goldberg heard that Mr. Peres was coming he said that I might consider having kugle as a special. So what is this kugle? It is an Eastern European family dish found in Jewish homes and is made with egg noodles and sour cream. Michael suggested I should I should call his mother, Ruth Goldberg of of Charlotte North Carolina , to find out how to make it.
So I called her and explained that I was a friend of her son’s and I wanted to find out how to make kugle Her husband was in the background asking what was up and she told him that there was some guy on the phone wanting her kugel recipe to serve to Mr. Perez, the ex-prime minister of Israel. I think he said something like, he’s a nut hang up on him.
No really I made that up. Ruth was great and she gave me the recipe and we made it but I think it was a bit undercooked so as Mr. Perez ate the kugle he said to me, “When you come to Israel I’ll teach you how to make kugle.” All right!
Here is how to make kugle and make sure you cook it until the noodles poking through are crispy.
Ruth Goldberg’s Lukshen Kugel
1 lb cooked wide egg noodles
beat 3 eggs
1 cup milk
8 oz cottage cheese
1 cup sour cream
2 tablespoons melted butter
? tsp. salt
1 tablespoon of sugar
a touch a pepper
? tsp. cinnamon
stir up with noodles
grease 9X13 pan and pour in contents
top with ? cup sugar mixed with 2 tsp. cinnamon
dot top with pats of butter
bake at 350 40 minutes
serve sour cream and fresh berries.
